The beautiful Maltese Islands consist of three main islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino (or Kemmuno). Malta, the largest island in the archipelago, has an area of 246 square km. The islands are situated in the central Mediterranean region, just south of Sicily, and have a total population of 370,000.

Evidence of civilisation in Malta goes back to 4,000 B.C. and over the centuries, many cultures have left their mark on the islands: the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Crusader Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and finally the British.

Malta was part of the British Empire from 1800 to 1964 and English has been an official language since the early nineteenth century. The island's climate makes it a very popular location for English language courses. The winter climate is mild (15°C), in summer the temperature rises to over 30°C, with a sea temperature of around 25°C.
